ON THE HISTORY OF OLD UKRAINIAN GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES (OBJECTS OF NATURAL LANDSCAPE “OBTAINED IN OWNERSHIP”: LEXICOGRAPHICAL ASPECT)

Abstract
In the article it is analyzed the lexical-semantic group of geographical names of fields obtained in ownership: they could have been taken (спадокъ, орекъ, отумерщина та ін.), bought (купля), inherited (спадокъ, орекъ, отумерщина etc.), presented (даровизна, данина), obtained as a reward for servicing (выслуга). The content of the investigated monuments helped to conclude that mostly they are represented by judicial-administrative and social-economic vocabu- lary that is the most ancient in the Ukrainian language, since agriculture was the basis of the economy at that time and land ownership was the guarantee of independence. As a rule it appeared in the process of purchasing-selling, presenting, mortgage, and that was recorded in the respective juridical documents. Contemporary-conditional (ranked) land owner- ship had a different nature and the way of forming – patches of land were given for servicing for some period of time or till death. It was investigated the evolution of geographical vocabulary for a considerable period of time, its formation, com- pared with old Polish and old Belarus monuments and also with the modern Ukrainian language and its dialects that gave a possibility to better understand and explain its current state. The material was taken from records of the Ukrainian language of the XVI – XVIII century (manuscripts and pub- lished) on the basis of fundamental files: “The dictionary of the Ukrainian language of the XVI century – the first part of XVII century”, “The historical dictionary of the Ukrainian language” edited by Ye. Tymchenko” that are kept in the Institute of the Ukrainian studies after I. Krypyakevych National Academy of Ukraine (city Lviv), and also in “Documents of Brotslavskyi province 1566–1606), “Epoch of Hetman Ivan Mazepa in documents”, “Governmental manifestos of Ivan Mazepa”. The characteristic feature of all the analyzed words is the fact that despite their long usage in the Ukrainian vocabu- lary and ancient origin it was impossible to determine their exact meaning. Even if the word had the exactly determined meaning, available illustrating material does not allow to say what object was denoted by this or that name. Regarding every reality structurally different meanings were revealed: simple, composed and descriptive, that certifies richness of expressive means of the Ukrainian language of the XVI – XVIII century.
