ОСОБЛИВОСТІ ФУНКЦІОНУВАННЯ СЛЕНГОВОЇ ЛЕКСИКИ В СУЧАСНІЙ АМЕРИКАНСЬКІЙ ХУДОЖНІЙ ЛІТЕРАТУРІ (НА МАТЕРІАЛІ РОМАНІВ ЧАКА ПАЛАНІКА)

Abstract
У статті розглядається поняття сленгу у сучасній лінгвістичній науці та висвітлюються основні закономірності функціонування сленгової лексики в англомовній художній літературі на прикладі романів американського письменника Чака Паланіка. Подається аналіз особливостей уживання сленгових одиниць в таких романах автора, як «Бійцівський клуб» і «Прокляті», та визначаються основні функції та мета використання автором сленгової лексики в цих художніх текстах. In the article the author gives special attention to such a linguistic phenomenon in modern linguistic science as slang. At the present stage in the development of scientific thought the concept of «slang» becomes increasingly important. Researchers have always shown interest in informal vocabulary and the problem of slang translation is the subject of constant scientific research. Such scholars as M. Arapov, I. R. Halperin, J. Hotten, V. A. Khomyakov, M. M. Makovsky, E. Partridge, O. M. Tepla and other linguists have dedicated their works to the study of various aspects of the slang theory. Slang is an active component of spoken language and is an integral part of standard language. Slang words and expressions constantly update, and they are used in speech of various professional groups and people of different status. Active youth slang users are young people between the ages of 12 and 30. The life span of some slang units is determined by centuries, while the others are gloriously disappearing, barely came into existence. It is considered as informal language and a corpus of jargon words, jargon values of well-known words, jargon phrases, which in their origin belong to different jargons and became common people's vocabulary. This article also deals with the peculiarities of the slang used in novels of modern American writer Charles Michael «Chuck» Palahniuk «Fight Club» and «Damned». We pay attention to the reasons that motivate the author to include slang in the language of the novels’ heroes. Special attention is given to the main functions of slang. Chuck Palahniuk uses slang vocabulary as a cultural and household detail. Slang becomes an integral part of the heroes’ language, showing their affiliation to the various social groups. The function of slang is the expression of the pursuit of self-identity. The usage of slang vocabulary also transmits the author's attitude to the described events and characters. Slang words allow the author to transfer the features of the described historical period. Slang units are used by the author to convey the emotive feeling of the slang users. The main reasons for using slang in the novels of Chuck Palahniuk is the desire to attract the attention of the reader, to show the heroes' belonging to a particular professional or social group, to demonstrate their inner world, and to avoid the use of traditional phrases and cliché.
