Osteomalacia, a Late Complication of Ichthyosis Vulgaris: A Case Report

Journal Title: Journal of Bone and Joint Diseases - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 0

Abstract

Introduction: Ichthyosis, a disorder of keratinization may result in impaired synthesis of Vitamin D, thus poor mineralization of bones. Case Report: We are reporting a case of 18-year-old female, who presented with progressively increasing musculoskeletal pain with large fine gray, dark scales on the skin. Blood investigations favored the diagnosis of Vitamin D deficiency. Skin biopsy suggested ichthyosis vulgaris. She was given Vitamin D and calcium supplementation for 12 weeks and found to have marked improvement in symptoms. Conclusion: In the presence of skin disorders such as ichthyosis, the delicate balance of Vitamin D and bone mineral metabolism may get disturbed, resulting in rickets and osteomalacia. Keywords:
