Pathologic and radiologic correlation of paediatric renal tumors

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: The renal tumors affecting infants and young children are distinct from those that arise in older children and adults. In the present study we attempted to compare the radiologic and histopathologic findings in paediatric renal tumors to understand and improve the utility of imaging for these lesions. Aim of the study: To compare the radiologic findings with istopathological diagnosis of pediatric renal tumors and utilise the sensitivity of imaging to improve the histopathological diagnoses and further management. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study done in the department of Pathology at Niloufer Hospital over a period of one and half years. Radiological details and histopathological details of renal tumors were compared. Observations and Results: A total of 26 renal tissue specimens were received out of which 19 showed tumors and tumor like conditions. The patient age ranged from 1 year to 9 years and the male to female ratio was 1:1. Most common renal tumors were Wilms tumor (15/19) cases.Concordance between the radiology and histopathology was seen in 84.61% cases and discordance between the two was seen in 15.39% cases. Conclusion: Neither clinical presentation nor radiological studies can predict the histologic pictures of most of pediatric renal tumors. Surgical intervention followed by histopathological evaluation yields definitive diagnosis. Wilm’stumor is the most common, malignant lesion with possibility of recurrence and should be suspected whenever there is predominant solid component with low enhancement on imaging. Radiological findings when used as aid at the time of histopathological evaluation improve patient management and hence survival rate.
