PATRONYMIC MODEL FORMATION IN UKRAINIAN ANTHROPONYMY AND OIKONYMY

Journal Title: Записки з ономастики - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 18

Abstract

The goal of this paper is to show the process of formation of models of Ukrainian family names and populated place names defined in onomastic literature as patronyms. We clarify the notion of a patronymic model in anthroponomy and oikonymy, analyse such models for proper names and oikonyms, and compare them. The object of our research is a set of models of Ukrainian family names and toponyms. The subject of the study is Ukrainian patronymic family names and patronym-derived oikonyms. Modern Ukrainian family name system preserves all types of anthroponyms historically formed as patronymic: last names with patronymic suffixes -ych, -ovych, -evych; with possessive formants -iv, -yn; with various other suffixes that could express patronymic property. A special role in family name formation was played by the depatronymization phenomenon: possessive names used along the name for identification purposes became hereditary invariable names (family names) by discarding the possessive formants. Patronymic models in oikonymy usually include names of populated places ending with -ychi and -ivtsi, -yntsi, which originally were the people’s names derived from the name of their patriarch. The named oikonym formants are plural forms of proper patronymic suffixes «-ych, -ovych, -evych, -ovets and -ynets» used in anthroponomy.
