Performance of upflow anoxic bioreactor for wastewater treatment
Journal Title: International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology - Year 2007, Vol 4, Issue 2
Abstract
Laboratory scale studies were conducted in an up-flow anoxic bioreactor (UFAB) using synthetic fertilizer wastewater for ascertaining the denitrification efficiency. The performance of the reactor was compared using ethanol and topioca starch as the carbon source. The initial NO3-N concentrations (50-250 mg/L) and hydraulic retention time (HRT, 12-24 h) were varied to evaluate the COD and NO3-N removal. The results from this study shows that ethanol gave very good denitrification efficiency (78-98%) compared to topioca starch (68-96%).

Effect of tween 80 added to the soil on the degradation of endosulfan by Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Endosulfan, a chlorinated cyclodiene insecticide is of environmental concern because of its apparent persistence and toxicity to many non target organisms. Endosulfan is hydrophobic and persists in soil for more than a y...
Combined effects of water pH and alkalinity on the accumulation of lead, cadmium and chromium to Labeo rohita (Hamilton)
Influence of pH (5.5, 7.0 and 8.5) and alkalinity (40 to 200 mg/L as CaCO3) on the accumulation of Pb (NO3)2, CdCl2, H2O and K2Cr2O7 to Labeo rohita (Hamilton) was investigated in the laboratory. Highest accumulation of...
Comparative study of body composition of different fish species from brackish water pond
Seven species of fish (Catla catla, Cirrhinus mrigala, Cyprinus carpio, Hypophthalmicthys molitrix, Labeo rohita, Mori-Rahu Hybrid and Thalla-Rahu Hybrid) were collected from a brackish water pond near Muzaffargarh, Paki...
Adsorptive removal of textile reactive dye using Posidonia oceanica (L.) fibrous biomass
The Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) leaf sheaths were used as low cost, available and renewable biological adsorbent for the removal of reactive textile dye from aqueous solutions. Batch experiments were c...
Pollution of south of Tehran ground waters with heavy metals
The reuse of nutrients and organic matter in wastewater sludge via on agricultural lands application is a desirable goal. However, trace or heavy metals present in sludge pose the risk of human or phytotoxicity from land...
