PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OF SELECTED OCCUPATIONAL GROUPS. Similarities and differences in approach to problems concerning physical activity among employees of corporation, health care staff and teachers

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2015, Vol 21, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction. Proper physical activity is the most important component of life style which exerts an effect on human health. It is undeniably necessary, and its prophylactic and therapeutic value is known. However, hypokinetic life style and underestimation of physical activity still concern too many people. The aim of this study was an attempt to determine attitudes towards health issues and physical activity among various occupational groups: teachers, health care staff and corporation employees. Material and Method. The study was conducted using the method of a diagnostic survey in the form of a questionnaire. The questions concerned the respondents’ approach to the problems of physical activity and self-reported health behaviours. Randomly selected representative groups comprised teachers (from primary, junior high, secondary and post-secondary schools), health care staff (mainly nurses, paramedics and physicians), and employees of corporations (automotive manufacturing company, steel industry companies). results. High BMI values were observed in nearly one-third of respondents (36.5%). Every fifth respondent evaluated his/her state of health as very good, and more than a half (66%) – as good. Nearly a half of heath care staff and teachers perform regular, recommended annual health check-ups, while among corporation employees – only every fourth (25%). Physical activity beneficial for health is undertaken several times a week by almost every third corporation employee (35%), 41% of teachers and 44% of health care staff. The preferred forms of physical activity in the population examined are walks, riding a bicycle, and swimming. The greatest barriers in undertaking physical activity are: lack of time (57%), and lack of motivation (40%). In turn, the strongest motivation for practicing physical activity is an improvement of the general wellbeing (72%), followed by health aspects and improvement of the silhouette. Conclusions. On the background of society, the occupational groups in the study compared favourably with respect to their attitude towards physical activity. However, this is still insufficient to struggle with the epidemics of civilisation diseases and achieve health benefits. In each occupational group it is necessary to undertake actions in order to increase the physical activity of the working population.key words: physical activity, life style components, occupational groups, motivation, barriers
