Physicians specializing in general medicine – factors affecting choice of specialization, problems encountered during specialization and future career plans

Abstract
Introduction. Information on factors affecting choice of specialization, employment situation, future career plans and problems encountered during specialization by physicians specializing in internal medicine in Poland can contribute to better monitoring of human resources and improvement of the specialization process.Aim. The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the opinion of doctors specializing in internal medicine on the factors affecting the choice of specialization, the problems encountered during specialization and future career plans after the specialization.Material and methods. The material consisted of data from 170 surveys that were conducted on courses for physicians specializing in general medicine conducted by the Clinic of Endocrinology CMKP in 2012 and 2013. Analysis of the material was quantitative, and was performed using the SPSS.Results. Respondents were relatively homogeneous group – both in terms of age, motivation to take specialization in general medicine and career plans after the specialization. The results show an alarmingly high incidence of problems during specialization process, especially with internships and courses, which are the foundation of specialization training.Conclusions. A serious problem is the declining interest of doctors to work in primary care.
