Phytoplankton diversity and abundance in Panguil Bay, Northwestern Mindanao, Philippines in relation to some physical and chemical characteristics of the water
Journal Title: Advances in Environmental Sciences - International Journal of the Bioflux Society - Year 2012, Vol 4, Issue 3
Abstract
Phytoplankton composition diversity, abundance and their relation with the physico-chemical parameters of the waters in two coastal sites in Panguil Bay, Philippines were compared. A total of 93 species belonging to four major groups (diatoms, dinoflagellates, silicoflagellates and cyanobacteria) were identified, with the diatoms being the chief component of the phytoplankton. Using several diversity indices, results showed minimal differences in the phytoplankton species between the two sites. The results of NPMANOVA revealed significant differences (p<0.05) in phytoplankton relative abundancebetween sites and within sites between months. These differences were attributed to variations in the physico-chemical characteristics of the water as reflected from the results of Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). Since results of the study reflect the importance of physical and chemical factors of the water on the phytoplankton community structure in Panguil Bay, it is suggested that changes in these factors, may it be due to natural or anthropogenic sources, may lead to impacts or changes in phytoplankton dynamics.

Study on the evolution of the aquatic fauna in Lacul Ştiucii reservation during 2000-2011, Cluj County, Romania
Lacul Ştiucii (Pike Lake) lying on the northwest side of the Transylvanian Plain, is one of the most interesting, important and fascinating reservations in Romania, which is known (among other things) for breaking a few...
Water quality assessment using macroinvertebrates and physico-chemical parameters in the riverine system of Iligan City, Philippines
The water quality in the riverine systems (Mandulog and Iligan) of Iligan City decreases as it approaches the downstream. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to determine which physico-chemical parameters wo...
Distribution of molluscan fauna in the Karangad estuarine mangroves, South East Coast of India.
t. A survey has been made during February 2010 to know the pattern of molluscan fauna in the mangroves located along the Karangad estuary. During the present investigation in the research area, 25 species of molluscs wer...
Use of natural zeolites from Maramures county (Romania) in removal of Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ ions from industrial wastewaters.
The use of natural zeolites in wastewaters cleaning is a highly appreciated method especially due to the natural zeolites high ion exchange capacity correlated to their relative low-cost exploitation. In order to study t...
