POLLUTION PHYSICO-CHIMIQUE DES EAUX DE BARRAGE DE LA REGION D’EL TARF. IMPACT SUR LA CHLORATION

Journal Title: Larhyss Journal - Year 2010, Vol 8, Issue 8

Abstract

Mexa and Chefia dams, located near the city of El Tarf, are used both for supplying drinking water and irrigation. The objective of our work is to describe and quantify inorganic and organic pollution of these waters and its impact on a physico-chemical treatment, chlorination. Our laboratory tests have shown that the water turbidity was high and that their inorganic composition was varied and had various origins. The organic pollution appears to be considerable because of a natural origin but also of exogenous origin. The humic substances are dominant in the total organics which is determined by various physico-chemical parameters. The application of chlorination under controlled conditions (chlorine ratio, contact time) leads to high chorine consumption potentials because of the presence of many reactive pollutants towards chlorine. In particular, the action of chlorine on the aquatic humic substances may result in the formation of various by-products such as organohalogenated compounds that are suspected to be carcinogenic and mutagenic towards humans.
