Polymyositis-like syndrome and other musculoskeletal manifestations of thyroid diseases
Journal Title: Reumatologia - Year 2006, Vol 44, Issue 6
Abstract
Many patients with thyroid diseases develop rheumatic symptoms overshadowed by the primary disease. Hypothyroid myopathy can masquerade as polymyositis, but it is a disease with a favourable prognosis. That is why thyroid function tests should be performed in all patients presenting with a symmetric proximal myopathy and elevated muscle enzymes. Patients with hypo and hyperthyroidism often present with myalgia, muscle weakness, arthralgia and arthritis. Patients with hyperthyroidism can have significant osteopenia. Increased fracture risk is observed in hypo and hyperthyroidism patients.
