POSSIBILITIES OF REHABILITATION WITH THE DOG’S ASSISTANCE IN PATIENTS WITH  CHOSEN DISORDERS

Abstract

Introduction Therapy with animal presence is more and more popular form of supporting rehabil- itation. Two most often used animals in this activity are dogs and horses. Dog`s presence during therapy is in Poland called “dogtherapy”. Unfortunately this definition is often overused to name all activities with dog, that’s why therapists using dogs, are not usually treated seriously enough. In the United States of America dog`s presence in therapy is called “dog-assisted therapy” and meetings without any therapeutic aim are called “dog-assisted activity”. Aim The purpose of this article is to present information about dog-assisted therapy. Materials and methods In this work, author made a review of articles form the Philadelphian List including PubMed, published after year 2000. Results After reviewing the literature it may be concluded that dog-assisted therapy is an effective form of rehabilitation and the therapeutic process support. Although the world’s largest groups of dog-assisted therapy beneficiaries are adults, in Poland the exercises are conducted mainly for children with various disabilities. Conclusion Dog-assisted therapy is quite recognizable but relatively unexplored and its therapeutic aims are not characterized enough. Therefore there is significantly important to per- form further studies in this field.
