Post Natal Growth Pattern of Infants Less than 2,500grams Using Z Scores
Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Low birth weight has many adverse consequences, some of which might be ameliorated if there is good postnatal compensatory or catch-up growth. Aim of the study: To record growth pattern in Low birth weight infants, compare their growth velocity with full-term peers during the first 6 months and its relation to different nutritional practice. Methods: This prospective study was conducted on 150 infants, divided into two groups:group1included 100 infants < 2,500 g, further subdivided into group1a included 70 preterm infants, group1b included 30 small for gestational age infants and group2 included 50 appropriate for gestational age babies as controls. Infants were followed for their catch-up growth every month during their first 6 months and anthropometric measurements were measured and Z-scores were calculated. Results: Significant catch-up growth for weight, length and head circumference(HC)were observed during the first6 months of life, however group1a remained lighter and shorter than infants of group1band group2 with mean z-score of weight(-0.79±0.67 ,-0.68±0.62 ,0.1±0.48) respectively, mean z-score of length(-1.75±0.81 ,-1.48±0.73, - 1.33±1.02) respectively. But catch-up in HC was faster in group1b than group1a but both remained lower than those of group2. Breast fed infants showed the best performance in developmental parameters in the three groups. Conclusion: Low birth weight infants showed catch-up growth during the first 6th months, but their weight, length and HC remained less than full-term peers and those with breast feeding showed better motor and mental developmental parameters.
