POSTEXERTIONAL OXIDATIVE STRES IN ROWERS OF VARIOUS AGE AND ATHLETIC EXPERIENCE

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 4

Abstract

Background. Physical exertion induces changes in antioxidant enzymes activity and lipid peroxidation products concentration in sportsmen. Intensive exercise increases free radicals generation with oxidativw as a consequence. The exrent of damage to biological structures and response to oxidative stress depend on age and physical efficiency. The aim of the study was to determine postexertional malondialdehyde concentration and glutathione peroxidase activity in three groups of rowers of various age and athletic experience.Material and methods. The study involved 14 rowers of Bydgoskie Towarzystwo Wioślarskie, divided into 3 groups based on age and athletic experience. Blood samples were taken from cubital vein before and after a training session. Malondialdehyde concentration was measured by Buege and Aust's method, while glutathione peroxidase activity were assessed according to Paglia and Valentine.Results. Malondialdehyde concentration before exertion was the highest in sportsmen with the longest athletic experience and it was the lowest in the youngest sportsmen. Glutathione peroxidase activity, both before and after exercise, was the lowest in the oldest rowers, while it reached the highest levels in the youngest group of sportsmen. A tendency of postexertional malondialdehyde concentration decrease in all three groups as well as statistically insignificant glutathione peroxidase activity increase in group of the youngest and the oldest sportsmen were demonstrated.Conclusions. The tendency of postexertional malondialdehyde concentration decrease in rowers may be evidence of increased clearance of this lipid peroxidation product as the effect of exercise. Insignificant increase of glutathione peroxidase activity may reflect hydrogen peroxide and/or organic peroxides formation. Observed differences may result from athletic experience, age or general condition of the sportsmen.
