Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. The aim ofthis study is to assess the posture ofchildren and youth with hearing loss/hard of hearing, wards ofthe Institute for the Deafin Warsaw.Material and methods. The studies were executed in the Institute for the Deafin Warsaw. These studies comprised children and youth with hearing disorders, aged 7-18 years. A total of 88 subjects were tested. The posture assessment was carried out with the use ofthe Moire's photogrammetric method. Results. The incorrect physiological cun/atures of the spine were noted in ca. 40% of the tested deaf boys, with the most freguent faults being concave shaped back and con-cave-round back. With age ofthe subjects the freguency of excessive physiological cun/atures of the spine tended to decrease. In the group of deaf girls postural defects were fo-und in approximately 62% of the subjects. The most frequent faults comprised postural ro-undback, concave back and concave-round back. Scoliotic postures and scoliosis were fo-undin ca. 64% ofthe subjects, at similarfreguencyin girls andin boys. The degree ofpro-gress of those changes was to a large extent insignificant, and defects could be categori-sed as merely residual scoliosis. Lateral fixed spinal curvature, with asymmetry in outline ofthe back, was found in ca. 4% of male students.Conclusions. The freguency of occurrence of postural defects in deaf children is si-gnificant and varied as regards the degree of progress, and consequently compensation and corrective measures related to posture defects should be undertaken in the first place in children and youth with developmental disorders.
