Preliminary studies on the dung beetles Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea in the Magurski National Park and its environs
Journal Title: Roczniki Bieszczadzkie - Year 2012, Vol 20, Issue 1
Abstract
Neither in the Beskid Niski Mts. nor in the Magurski National Park has a specialised inventory of coprofagous Scarabaeoidea been taken so far. The only fragmentary data about these insects comes from the Polish Fauna Catalogue by Burakowski et al. (1983). The research project is aimed at determining the species composition of coprophagous Scarabaeoidea, the structure of their dominance and attempting to identify potential habitats with the greatest biodiversity of these insects in the Magurski National Park. Stations located in Rozstajne, Krempna, Kąty, Grab and Mszana were selected for research. Field work was carried out between April and early October. Beetles were collected using baited trap and flotation methods. During the research done in 2011, 22 species belonging to the Scarabaeoidea superfamily were found. The greatest number of species in the Magurski NP was found in Rozstajne – 18, while in Krempna and Grabie there were 8 species each, and 9 in Kąty (Table 1). According to the Catalogue, the following were recorded in this area: Onthophagus fracticornis, Aphodius erraticus, A. luridus, A. prodromus, A. pusillus and A. rufipes. The remaining 16 species found by the author should be considered new for this area. The most interesting ones are Onthophagus illyricus and Aphodius scrutator. The presence of these two species in this area may certainly be associated with the fact that the main trans-Carpathian migration route of southern elements, namely the Dukielska Pass, is located close to the south-western border of the Park.
