Journal Title: RSBO - Year 2009, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction: Among the most important pathologies in Dentistry are the cystic lesions, which are defined as common pathological entities that involve the maxillary-mandibular complex. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of cystic lesions diagnosed at the Laboratory of Histopathology of the Positivo University (Curitiba), in the period of February 2002 to August 2006, correlating them to age and sex. Material and methods: 242 cases of cysts registered and diagnosed as odontogenic cysts were studied. All cases were described separately for prevalence and distribution for sex and patients’ ages. Results and conclusion: The more frequent cystic lesion was the radicular cyst, corresponding to 42% of the samples; followed by odontogenic cysts (24%), inflammatory cysts (11%) and keratocysts (10%). Also, cysts were more prevalent in males than in females, mainly between the third and the fifth decades of life.
