Pro-and anti-health behaviours of winter swimmers
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2019, Vol 35, Issue 1
Abstract
Background. Winter swimming, or bathing in cold and icy water during the winter season, is an increasingly popular form of winter extreme sport. The aim of the study was to assess the diet, anti-health behaviors and physical activity of people practicing winter swimming. Material and methods. 124 people practicing winter swimming took part in the research. The author’s questionnaire was the research too l used for the study. Results. Over 50% of winter swimming women and almost 50% of winter swimming males consume four or five meals a day. In both sexes, insufficient intake of vegetables and fruits, cereal products, milk and its products as well as fish was noted. Almost half of the surveyed women (49.09%) and over half of the men (57.38%) take physical activity several times a week. It was shown that almost half of the studied winter swimmers (47.41%) consumed alcohol sporadically. The vast majority of respondents (74.07% women and 77.05% men) do not smoke cigarettes at all. Almost half of the respondents (45.69%) declared that they did not experience a cold disease at all. Conclusions. 1. Gender does not affect the amount of meals consumed during the day in the studied group. 2. Winter swimmers eat too few vegetables, fruits, cereal products, dairy products and fishes. 3. The increased winter swimmers’ awareness and their knowledge about the principles of proper nutrition should contribute to proper nutrition patterns and good nutritional status. 4. Consumption of alcohol is too high in both groups of the female and male winter swimmers 5. The vast majority of winter swimmers care for their physical condition by regularly practicing other physical activities. 6. The favorable effects of winter swimming are associated with better cold tolerance and systematic tempering of the body, reducing the number of cold diseases.
