PROFESSIONAL AND SOCIAL-POLITICAL ACTIVITY OF THE UKRAINIAN LAWYERS IF THE STANISLAVIV REGION (END OF THE XIX – FIRST HALF OF THE XX CENTURY): SOURCE CRITICISM ASPECT

Abstract
Nowadays among the Ukrainian lawyers there exists and increasing interest concerning history of development of the Ukrainian advocatus, activity of the famous and not-so-famous representatives. The names of K. Levytsky, L. Bachynsky, D. Vitovsky, S. Vytvytsky, I. Makukha, T. Okunevsky and others are already symbolic in the national history of struggle for national rights of Ukrainians. All of them either originated or worked in the Stanislaviv region (modern Ivano-Frankivsk region), they were lawyers, i.e. representatives of the social-political stratum, which headed the political movement of Ukrainians in the Western Ukrainian territory on the brink of the century. This article analyses the source basis, which provides scientists with information con¬cerning the profound role of the Ukrainian lawyers in the social life of Ukraine in the mentioned period. It concentrates on the sources, which characterize lives, activity, legal and political views, civic and national-cultural activity of the Stanislaviv lawyers. There is a whole number of documents on the Ukrainian advocates’ activity registerd in the funds of the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv, State Archive in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, manuscript department of the Lviv Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Memoirs and memoir literature constitute an important source of a personal character, as it allows to reveal motives, views, inner world, political and worldview perceptions of the authors and prominent activists. They provide lots of fact material and explanations concerning behaviour of the activists at particular moments of their lives, as well as they include evaluations of famous historical people or events. There are some published memoires of lots of famous lawyers, social-political activists, where they mention their mates in education, professional activity, their comrades in the political struggle, economic and cultural work. There should be mentioned works by I. Makhuha, T. Matskiv, Ye. Olesnytsky, A. Slyzh, K. Tryvolsky, A. Chaikovsky and others. A lot of material of the memoirs character that include information on a large number of Stanislaviv lawyers is kept in the historical country study miscellanies of the Ukrainian diaspora, connected thematically and territorially. It includes the 2-volume edition of the “Almanah Stanislavivskoi zemli” (“The almanac of the Stanislaviv land”), works dedicated to the regions of Kolomyya, Gorodenka, Rohatyn, Snjatyn etc. Modern country study works, which study the history of cities and villages of the Ivano-Frankivsk region, also include mentions of the lives and activity of lawyers. Nowadays, the study of the professional and civic activity of the Ukrainian lawyers of the Stanislaviv region provides an opportunity to rely on the wide range of sources, it allows to run a complex study of the Ukrainian history on both the regional and national levels.
