Progress & Tradition: Challenges in Morocco and other Predominantly Muslim Nations

Journal Title: Advances in Social Sciences and Management (ASSM) - Year 2025, Vol 3, Issue 01

Abstract

This paper explores Morocco’s intricate balancing act as a Muslim-majority nation navigating the tension between progressive leadership and traditional societal expectations. It examines how Morocco’s monarchy and political elites, often shaped by Western education and global partnerships, pursue modernization in areas such as economic reform, gender equality, and infrastructure development. At the same time, the paper highlights the challenges posed by deeply rooted religious, tribal, and cultural values that shape the perspectives of the broader populace. Through an analysis of Morocco’s governance strategies, including leveraging religious authority, fostering gradual reform, and engaging with Western allies, the paper underscores the complexities of aligning modern aspirations with traditional identities. The Moroccan case provides valuable insights into the broader dynamics of leadership in Muslim-majority nations facing similar crossroads.
