PROPER NAMES AS A TRANSLATION PROBLEM (CASE STUDY OF THE ENGLISH TEXTS OF CHILDREN’S FANTASY AND THEIR UKRAINIAN TRANSLATIONS)

Abstract

The article highlights the characteristics of proper names rendering, i. e. antroponyms and toponyms-quaz, in fantasy texts for children. The contextual analysis of the English texts of fantasy by E. Colfer and M. Buckley and there Ukrainian translations is carried out. As a result it has been found out that the invariant lexical units at the chronotopical level are toponyms-quaz, and the invariant lexical units at the personage context are speaking antroponyms. Toponyms-quaz accentuate believability of imaginary secondary worlds of fantasy, thus their adequate translation variants contribute to preserving the obligatory fantasy genre features in a target text. As concerning the speaking proper names they appertain to the obligatory lexical units of children’s literature. In this regard the key issue is to investigate the characteristics of antroponyms’ translation, namely special aspects of their “speaking” nature rendering. Translational analysis of the source texts (ST) and target texts (TT) is carried out to reveal the degree of equivalency / adequacy of the rendered proper names as well as to identify the most efficient translation procedures and techniques used for fantasy onyms rendering. In the article the ways of producing an adequate translation are suggested with account of meaning of ST lexical units, their contexts and finally the genre of the text.
