Radionuclide accumulation in juveniles and adults of prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) of Zaporizke Reservoir

Abstract

It had been studied the processes of radionuclide migration and accumulation in different age-old specimens of Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) in the Zaporizke Reservoir with multipurpose destination. The water body is located in the Dnipro cascade, by the genesis and location it is plains-rivers one, by the configuration it is the channels, by depth it is mid-deep one; by the exchange of water it is a reservoir with very large exchange. The research material was used for the young-of-the-year (0+), one-year-olds (1+) and adults (3–4+) of Prussian carp, caught in fishing areas of the Zaporizke Reservoir during the summer period 2015–2016. Fishing of adult fish was carried out by a standard set of stacked nets with a call from 30 to 120 mm. The juvenile fish were caught with a ten-meter cavalry nest from a nylon case with a step of a call of 4 mm. The contents of artificial and natural radionuclides of 137Cs, 90Sr, 226Ra, 232Th, 40K were determined in the whole bodies of juveniles and skeletal muscle of adult fish with aid of the scintillation spectrometer of gamma- and beta-radiation of SEG-001 "ACP-C" and SEB-01-150, the means were expressed as Bq/kg of wet natural weight. The radionuclide accumulation processes were estimated using the accumulation coefficient. It was found that with age the content of artificial radionuclide 137Cs gradually increased by almost 2.5 times from 2 Bq/kg in juveniles (0+) to 4.7 Bq/kg in adults. Concentration of 90Sr decreased by 32% in individuals (1+) compared to juveniles (0+), and increased on 1.5 times in adult fish from 0.8 Bq/kg (0+) to 1.73 Bq/kg. For all radionuclides studied with the exception of 40K the accumulation coefficients (K) in adults were 2 times higher than those in young-of-the-year. The highest K rates were recorded for 137Cs and 232Th. Both artificial and natural radionuclides exhibited high values of K, indicating a significant potential risk of their effects on living organisms. The conducted studies of radioactive contamination levels of fish indicate that fluctuations in the radionuclide contents are due not to the distance from the sources of pollution, but the intensity of radionuclide migration. Although, with increasing age of fish, the concentrations of artificial radionuclides increased in Prussian carp at the Zaporizke reservoir, they did not exceed the MAC and did not affect the food quality of fish. The results can be used to further assess the environmental impacts and risks of the complex impact of harmful substances on the quality of fishery products.
