Raibenshe: Ek Bipannaastitver Khonje

Abstract

Raibenshe dance is one of the most oldest and energetic folk art of Bengal. It is exclusively performed by men belong to the Bauri, Bagdi ,Domes and other oppressed community of Hindu society. In mediaval Bengal they worked as bodyguard of landlord and Zaminder. The term Rai means Royal or Kingly and Benshe means Bamboo. This performance not only needed varied expression of military energy and knowledge of martial art but also requires high acrobatic skill and practice. In 1930, an eminent folklorist Shri Gurusaday Dutt first gave an attention on this folk form of Bengal and interestingly discovered its origin connected with Raja Man Singh of Rajasthan. In 1932 He started the Bratachari movement and tried to protect and preserve cultural heritage of Bengal like Raibenshe, Kathi dance, Sari dance etc.The main thrust of Bratachari Movement was to recognize the self esteem, creating a sense of world citizenship and national awareness among the common people through folk tradition by nourishing the habit of physical exercise, dance, drama, music and social service. Raibenshe dance had remarkable contribution in folk culture of undivided Bengal. This traditional art form lost its significance with gradual loss of importance of Bratachari Movement after death of Gurusaday Dutt. Though this art form did not catch on all over India still it has immense impact to develop physical, mental and intellectual culture of a nation in a wide , comprehensive manner.
