Regional aspects of economic growth in Germany and Poland. An attempt of comparison
Journal Title: Barometr Regionalny. Analizy i Prognozy - Year 2011, Vol 2011, Issue 1
Abstract
The rationale behind examining economic growth and its factors results primarily from the role they play in broadly understood economic welfare. Exploring complex issues of economic growth requires applying an eclectic and flexible approach, which accommodates various view points and accentuates different growth dimensions by linking theories with empirics. The following paper can be regarded as such attempt. It lays down five pillars’ perspective for looking at economic growth – supply sided one encompassing elements such as productivity, capital intensity or employment; sectoral one referring to main sectors’ contribution to economic growth, business cycle ones which relates to demand side; as well as determinants influencing region’ economic shape such as unemployment or inflation and finally determinants of knowledge based economies reflecting regions' equipment with students population or R&D sector size. The first part outlines the scheme integrating various growth determinants and grouping them in five modules influencing economic growth directly and indirectly. This scaffolding lays foundation for elaborating the composite as well as partial indices. Results of carried estimations which take into account both static and dynamic dimensions are presented in the next part. The obtained figures indicate the existence of interregional differences as far as economic growth potential is concerned. Values of economic growth composite index ranges in Germany between 0,25-,054 and in Poland between 0,18-0,62. The results point out that whereas in Germany these Bundesländer, which reveal the lowest values of current partial indices (reflecting region's position in terms of particular growth determinants) have simultaneously the most favorable dynamic. Such relation cannot be discerned in Poland. Though, in both countries the “leaders monotony”, i.e. frequent featuring of few selected regions in the best class, is apparent, primarily in Germany and to lesser extent in Poland.
