Relation Between Ethics and Management as Perceived by CEO’s of Medium- and Large-Sized Companies

Journal Title: International Journal of Contemporary Management - Year 2010, Vol 9, Issue 4

Abstract

The pro-ethic orientation seems to be a much underestimated quality of Polish companies. Its point of reference are not only system solutions, but likewise moral beliefs of CEO’s. The aim of the article is to present the results of the exploratory qualitative analysis, which was conducted within the „Moral leadership standards of Polish managers and entrepreneurs” grant (financed by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and the Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities). The analysis was based on a sample of partially structured interviews with 37 CEO’s, who manage middle and large-sized companies located in different regions of Poland. They were asked about relation between ethics and management. The analysis shows a very diverse picture of moral attitudes of Polish CEO’s. Based on their perception of the ethics and management relationship, the following five types of perspectives were distinguished: „corporate proceduralism”, „ethical professionalism”, „ethical situationism”, „technocratic legalism”, and „contract ethics”. As a result of the coding procedure several differences of the perspectives were separated: perceived connections between moral standards and self-conceptualizing of a manager’s professional role, the frame of moral judgment, perception of free choice in moral issue situations, moral rigorism or relativism, the source and degree of unambiguity of ethical standards.
