RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TRAUMATIC SPINAL CANAL ENCROACHMENT AND NEURODEFIC1T İN THORACOLUMBAR BURST FRACTURES

Journal Title: Journal of Turkish Spinal Surgery - Year 1996, Vol 7, Issue 2

Abstract

Thoracolumbar burst fracture is an unstabSe spine injury, İn such fractures, neuroiogsc injury may occur due to spinai canaI encroachment. The purpose of this study is, to detect whether there is a correlation between % ioss of anterior vertebral height (A VH), Cobb's angie, vertebral body angte (VBA) and meduiiary canal encroachment İn (CT), and risk of neurodeficit occurence, or not 114 cases with burst fractures in thoracolumbarjunction were evaiuated. Theirmean age vvas 38.7, and45 of them were femate and 69 of them were male. Fractures as to the levels were as foilows. T11-12 (29 cases), L1 (55 cases) and L2 (30 cases). İn 11 cases of T11-12, 19 cases of L1 and 7 cases of 12 fractures there were neurodeficits. Correlation test was usedin statistical analysis. Finaily, there was no correlation between spinai canal encroachment amounts İn CT, fracture level and type of Burst fracture (Deniş). İn contrary, there was significant correlation between vertebral body angle (VBA), Cobb's angle and % İoss of Anterior Vertebral Height, However, there wa$ a correlation between worse neuroiogical status and increasingly % of meduiiary canal encroachment in (CT) (r= 0,5775, p - 0.000).
