Relationships between chosen measurable parameters of mandibular movements and the morphology of teeth occlusal plane. Part I. condylar inclination and anterior guidance
Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 6
Abstract
Aim of the study. To determine the relationships between the height and convexity of lateral teeth cusps, and condylar inclination and anterior guidance.Materials and methods. The study comprised 50 patients, aged 18–46, who had lower premolars and molars (a total of 237 teeth) examined. Patients who had met the following inclusion criteria were eligible for the study: no disorders of the temporomandibular joint, no disorders of the neuromascular system, no signs of periodontal diseases, lower premolars and/or molars without caries and fillings, pain-free stomatognathic system during examination and no prosthetic restorations. The examination consisted of three stages, i.e. axiography of mandibular movements, taking lower teeth impression and preparing plaster models, and computer analysis of plaster models. Based on the examination, the coefficient of correlation between the cusp height and convexity of cusp slopes, and anterior guidance and condylar inclination on the working and balancing sides was calculated.Results. There are average and strong relationships between condylar inclination and the height and convexity of lateral teeth cusps. These relationships are stronger on the side of the examined joint and concern more cusp convexity than cusp height. There are also average and strong relationships between anterior guidance and lateral teeth height. The steeper the anterior guidance, the higher the cusps of modelled lateral teeth.Conclusions. As depicted by the study results the consideration of anterior guidance and condylar inclination seems to play a significant role in planning all prosthetic restorations. Therefore, the use of articulators with individually adjustable values of these parameters by prosthetists appears justified.
