Journal Title: International Journal of Research in Social Sciences - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

Energy and Sustainable development: It involves the equitable sharing of the benefits of economic activity across all sections of society, to enhance the well-being of humans, protect health and alleviate poverty. If sustainable development is to be successful, the attitudes of individuals as well as governments with regard to our current lifestyles and the impact they have on the environment will need to change. Situation Analysis and present thought: It has now been established that the combined efforts of governments, corporations and non-governmental organizations are needed to reverse the damage caused to the environment over the past number of decades. Moreover organizations are also realizing that following environment friendly practices will also result in significant benefits and in the long run be beneficial for their bottom line. For instance, it is quite clear that usage of renewable energy by the Indian Railways (IR) will not only help reduce carbon emissions but also provide the much needed energy security.
