Abstract
Bhartrihari is a central figure in the Indian philosophy of language from V century. His text About the Sentences and the Words (Vakyapadia) is considered as a summary of a long tradition in the Indian investigation of language. A poet with the same name lived at the same time. There is no agreement among the investigators if both are the same personality. The main work of Bhartrihari is organized rhythmically. The philosophical ideas of Bhartrihari gravitated toward the Advita Vedanta School and have also some common ground with Buddhism and Kashmir shaivism. Among the main ideas which make the work unique are the untranslatable sphota – the speech in the mind and the understanding the whole meaning of the sentence as an insight or intuition– pratibha. The text was prepared for translation at the Special Center of Sanskrit Studies in J. Neru University, New Delhi with the help of Dr. Mishra, Prof Kapil Kapur, Dr. Shukla and Sharda in reading and discussing the original text of Bhartrihari. I am deeply grateful to them.
