Robotization: Political and Security Implications of the Use of Drones in the Digital Age

Journal Title: Conjuntura Austral: journal of the Global South - Year 2014, Vol 5, Issue 23

Abstract

This essay poses some initial reflections on (1) how drones relate to the cyberspace and (2) how they affect the conduct of war in the 21st century. In addition, it explores (3) the theoretical and practical relationship between the processes of globalization and digitization from an International Political Economy perspective and the increasing use of robots in the battlefield. The text is divided in two sections. The first briefly presents some of the issues arising from the use of drones in battle from the American War on Terror experience, as well as the consequences of the domestic employment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The second section delves into the proliferation of robots as a feature of two processes currently underway: globalization and digitization, and presents evidence that shows that “robotization” is not only a natural consequence but also a structural trend of the Digital Age.
