Abstract
The article is a kind of a commentary on Leviticus 16: 1-34, the aim of which is to describe in detail the ritual of the Day of Atonement. Following the presentation of the context for the discussed chapter, the author describes, in the form of a commentary on the specific fragments of biblical texts, the holy liturgy along with a brief explanation of the meaning of the performed activities. The Day of Atonement was one of the most important feast days in Israel. This feast had its own unique ritual. Having been adequately prepared, an archpriest, cleansed and suitably attired, drew lots from a lottery box over two goats which were brought by the people. Then he offered the selected goat to God as a propitiatory sacrifice entering with goat’s blood to the Holy of Holies and sprinkling the mercy seat. After that, there was a rite with a goat for Azazel. Having transferred symbolically the sins of the whole Israel to the goat, the high priest sent it off to the desert. This symbolized separation of the Chosen People from sins. After the rite had been completed, the high priest underwent cleansing, and then he returned to the community. It was a day of fasting for the whole nation during which the high priest interceded with the Lord on behalf of the people. And through following a precise order of the services and sacrifices included in the Law, he was granted absolution and forgiveness of all the sins of Israel.
