Abstract

The fifth part of “Dental Clinical Guidance. Prevention and treatment of dental caries in children” describes the organization of dental care of children in Scotland, as well as the role of pediatric dentists employed for public health care service, which accounts for The Scottish Public Dental Care, and in highly specialist institutions. The “control list” specifies the most important information which should be included in a child’s referral to a specialized medical center. The chapter „Check-ups” presents the rules of planning their frequency and the elements of the assessment of oral cavity condition which should not be missed during a check up. The chapter “Additional support” concerns neglect and abuse of children. It was pointed out that it is the obligation of a dental team to inform social workers, a General Practitioner or nurse about the suspicion of general or dental neglect of a child or about a child abuse. Another point in the chapter were the procedures used with the children with severe dental caries, and the role of every member of a dental team. The chapter “Research, audit and service development” covers the elements of preventive and therapeutic methods which should be assessed and improved for the advantage of pediatric dental care. This chapter also presents the plans of further development of pediatric dental care in Scotland over the whole country. It was emphasized that there is a great necessity of specialized pediatric dental care, dental proceedings and coordination of treatment over the country.
