Shared Competences in Multidisciplinary Dementia Care: Validation of a Self-appraisal Instrument

Journal Title: GeroFam - Year 2010, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: The complexity of dementia care requires the sharing of basic competences among professionals in multidisciplinary teams and dementia networks. Aim: To develop and investigate psychometric properties of an instrument measuring Shared Competences in Multidisciplinary Dementia Care (SC-MDC). Methods: We developed a questionnaire and assessed its reliability, construct validity and discriminative validity. Results: Fifty-one primary- care physician trainees and 23 nursing- home physician trainees in their final training year completed the SC-MDC. Factor analysis for construct validity yielded three factors (with19 items) that explained almost 58% of the total variance. The three factors, or subscales, were the three competence domains of Dementia patient care, Interactions with informal caregivers and Professional interactions. The reliability of the instrument, expressed as Chronbach’s alpha, was excellent, namely, 0.90 (subscales: 0.91, 0.73, and 0.70, respectively). Higher nursing- home physician trainees scores for Dementia patient care (p < .001), and Professional interactions ( p < .001)], but not for Interactions with informal caregivers (p = .07) reflect the discriminant validity. Conclusion: The SC-MDC represents a reliable, valid, and discriminative instrument for selfappraisal of shared competences in multidisciplinary dementia care, and may it be useful in monitoring and improving continuing medical education and professional development in dementia care.
