Shīʿī Scholar Hāshim Maʿrūf al-Ḥasanī’s Use of Textual Criticism in Identifying
Journal Title: Ankara Üniversitesi İlahiyat Fakültesi Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 58, Issue 2
Abstract
Fabricated Traditions One of the most significant Shīʿī authors of the 20th century in Lebanon, Hāshim Maʿrūf alḤasanī is known for his critical approach towards Shīʿa thought. Al-Mawḍūʿāt, one of his masterworks, enables us to explore his ideas concerning the narrations in hadith sources and traditional hadith methodology. Through a rigorous reading of his al-Mawḍūʿāt, the present study investigates the following two issues: Firstly, I discuss how al-Ḥasanī, as a Shīʿite scholar approaches to the issue of hadith fabrication. In doing so, I highlight the points that alḤasanī differs from conventional Shīʿite understanding with regard to hadith fabrication in particular. Secondly, I examine the ways and to what extent al-Ḥasanī employs textual criticism in the identification of fabricated traditions.
