Sodomy on Board. Sexuality and Power in the Carrera de Indias (16th and 17th centuries)
Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2010, Vol 3, Issue 3
Abstract
The discovery, conquest and colonization of America offered to men and women of the Old World wealth and endless opportunities. In this context, thousands of men of different ages, ethnics and social origins, engaged in the Carrera de Indias and challenged inclement weather, the virulence of the ocean and the discomforts of the journey. This article researches the sexual experiences that these men lived during the journey because, being a male environment, the sodomitical relationships proliferated. This work specifcally examines how the hierarchical organization and the adverse conditions that characterized the daily lives of seamen, favored the reproduction of relationships of social and sexual domination. Almost, this paper studies the formation of consensual relationships among individuals who were socially homogeneous to show the diversity that the sexual experiences could have at sea.
