Abstract
More than half of the people sent to Siberia from Poland for participation in the January Uprising belonged to the so-called “privileged classes”, above all the nobility. They were not people who were used to physical work, who knew how to cultivate land or craft. So they were unable to earn their living in exile. Over 90% of the exiles who received benefits belonged to this group. The representatives of Siberian administration did not agree on how to treat this group in exile. Some thought that the exiles from the nobility should feel the burden of punishment, and material poverty is one of its elements, others – that it should be easier for the exiles to adapt to the new environment and allow them, by reducing the rigor of supervision, to earn their living. Proponents of the latter solution, above all the Tobolsk governor Aleksander Despot-Zenowicz, also believed that the exiles from this group should be concentrated in the cities, which would not only enable them to earn money, but would also facilitate the supervision of their actions.
