Abstract
Following the reign of Joseph II 1780-1790, most of his reforms were abolished and no land registers were kept for over 30 years. That is why it was decided that a new land cadastre would be introduced. As early as 1806, preparatory works were done on a testing ground of 1 square mile near Vienna with the use of plane tables. These actions resulted in the patent of 23 December 1817 introducing a ‘Permanent Cadastre’, called in Polish literature ‘Galician Cadastre’, into the whole monarchy. It transpired, however, that, due to the high cost its implementation involved in a number of provinces (including Galicia), this patent was not put into effect for the next 30-35 years. Therefore, it was decided that until the ‘Permanent Cadastre’ is completed, a provisional cadastre would be implemented. This cadastre, commonly referred to as Metryka Franciszkańska (it was called the ‘Provisional Cadastre’ in the patent) was based on Metryka Józefińska, while taking into account the changes that had occurred since the 1780s. The ‘Permanent Cadastre’ was based on the patent of 23 December 1817. In Galicia this cadastre was produced in the mid-19th century. It was a professionally prepared cadastre containing, among other things, maps, which was a novelty when compared to the previous Austrian cadastres. The work mentioned above was done by suitably qualified land surveyors and their assistants. These efforts resulted in maps and cadastral documentation for the whole Galicia, a great number of which are held in Polish and Ukrainian archives.
