STATISTICAL LITERACY: EXCESSIVE REQUIREMENT OR TODAY'S NECESSITY

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the concept of literacy of population and the evolution of literacy according to the requirements of nowadays. Considerable attention is paid to different approaches to the definition of literacy and to the necessity of multifaceted literacy of population. Fast social changes raise new demands and motivate everybody to adapt to new conditions. To have ability to write and read is not enough to survive in modern society. This fact demands new high – level requirements to education. The paper emphasizes the increasing overload of information in the society and the need for effective decision – making in the modern conditions of large information flows that surrounds every person. Information becomes the most important power and today it defines the development of society. That is why the state needs the specialists, who are able to analyze the social processes deeply and make optimal decisions. Special attention is paid to statistical literacy of population and its necessity in the life of every modern person. In addition, we characterize approaches of foreign scientists to statistical literacy, and emphasize the attention to statistical literacy of population abroad in contrast to Ukraine.
