Abstract
The inauguration of the 2010/2011 academic year at the National Defence University (Akademia Obrony Narodowej) was held on October 2010. President of the Republic of Poland Bronisław Komorowski, who delivered an opening speech, hosted the ceremony. Referring to the topic of the lecture, he stated that security is not a state, but a continuous process that should be constantly worked on in order not to be surprised by what the future may bring. The defence of the state is the pillar of security. The president decisively supported the maintaining the guarantee of defence expenditure share in relation to the Gross Domestic Product. Consequently, "professional army will be effective when it is continually modernized and trained, ' said the President. The Polish defence system and armed forces are the components of our state construction that constitute the pillars of its independence and democracy. In refe-rence to AON, the President ascertained that no other university in Poland could replace National Defence University. It is an ideal place to discuss the shape of the Polish Armed Forces. The president also expressed an opinion that he appreciated the efforts of military schools and universities. However, at the same time he believes that the current system of military education is too dispersed and undoubtedly requires reforms.
