Study of fractures of the distal end of humerus in adults
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Orthopedics - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Distal humerus fractures occur in the younger age group due to high energy trauma and in elderly woman as a result of relatively low energy trauma. The treatment process consists of determining the injury mechanism, defining the diagnostic modalities and developing a treatment algorithm. Aim: To study of fractures of the distal end of humerus in adults presented at a Tertiary Care Hospital. Material and Methods: The present study included 20 cases of distal end of humerus fractures. A careful history was elicited from the patient and/or attendants to reveal the mechanism of injury and the severity of trauma. All patients were treated surgically with open reduction and rigid internal fixation by bicolumnar plating. Patients were followed up for 6 months to evaluate the outcome by Mayo Elbow Performance Score. Results: The maximum incidence was in the third and fourth decade with Male: Female ratio of 3:2. Left upper limb was commonly involved in 14 (70%) cases. Most of the cases i.e., 14 (70%) cases were of type 13C2 fractures. Mayo Elbow Performance Score was excellent in 12 patients (60 %), good in 5 patients (25%), and fair in 3patients (15%). Conclusion: Fractures of distal humerusare commoner in third and fourth decade of life with male predominance with road traffic accident as common mode of injury. These fractures demands careful evaluation, classification of fracture type and preoperative planning.
