Study of variations in the Arcuate artery
Journal Title: Applied Physiology and Anatomy Digest - Year 2018, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
Introduction: Arcuate artery is branch of Dorsalis pedis artery which supplies web spaces through its branches. Position and distribution of Arcuate artery is imperative to surgeons. The study was planned to know the variations of Arcuate artery. Methods: The study was conducted on 60 cadaveric lower limbs in the Department of Anatomy,TNMC & BYL Nair Ch. Hospital, Mumbai. Dorsum of foot was dissected. Arcuate artery and its branches were traced and noted. Observations & results: Arcuate artery was present in 46 cases (76.66%). High origin of Arcuate arterywas observed in 2 cases (3.33%). In 6 (10%) cases arcuate artery terminated in 2nd dorsal metatarsal artery. Arcuate artery was absent in 14 cases (23.33%). Conclusion: Arcuate artery has variations with regard to origin & distributions. The present study will be useful for the surgeons to assess the blood supply of the dorsum of foot prior to surgeries.
