Studying Growth Indices and Grain Yield of Barley Cultivars at Planting Dates in Isfahan Region
Journal Title: International Journal of Farming and Allied Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
Planting date and cultivar are of the agricultural factors which can be effective on protection of plant against undesirable environmental factors and also enjoyment of desirable factors and optical energy absorbed by plant population and accumulation of dry matter. It seems necessary to study effects of the above factors in combined study of two factors of planting date and cultivar to increase production efficiency in the surface area. For this reason, test was performed in agricultural year of - in research station of Faculty of Agriculture of Islamic Azad University , Khorasgan Branch as Split-Split Plots as randomized complete blocks design with three replications. Planting date in three levels including October, November and November) was regarded as main factor and cultivars in three levels including (Nosrat No. , Shoori and Fajr ) were regarded as sub factor. To determine growth trend, samplings were done every two weeks from three foliar stage to harvesting stage. With delay in planting , leaf area index, maximum total dry matter and maximum leaf area index were reduced. Accumulation of dry matter was slow at the beginning of growth , then , it rapidly increased by developing leaves , was maximized in , and days after planting and after that , it decreased. There was similar trend in leaf area index with this difference that leaf area index was maximized in pollination stage but the maximum dry matter was observed in maturity stage. Total dry matter loss at the end of growth period at the first and second planting dates in Fajr variety was less than that in other varieties. Interpretation of variation trend of crop growth rate (CGR) , net assimilation rate (NAR) and relative growth rate (RGR) was in line with the above results. The second planting date had the highest harvest index due to high grain yield (kg/hectare ) compared with its biological yield. The highest lodging rate was observed in the first planting date. Leaf area index loss, total dry matter and crop growth rate at the end of the growth period in the first and second planting dates in Fajr cultivar was lower than that in other cultivars. Considering the results of effect of planting date and cultivar on all evaluated traits, it is inferred that the best planting date is November and the best cultivar is Fajr for cultivating barley under conditions similar to the present study.
