SUBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT OF EFFECTS OF BOCCIA GAME ON PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Abstract
[b]Background. [/b]Sport for disabled people has changed across the years. Initially, the aim was to amend functioning and rehabilitation of disabled. It had evolved then to sport activity and eventually developed into a crucial sports discipline - disabled sports. Nowadays this sport unites the most talented athletes with disabilities all over the world. Sport is currently one of the few disciplines which contribute to reduction of social exclusion of people with different sorts of disabilities. The aim of the study was to examine whether 5-year participation in boccia trainings and competitions reduces social exclusion of people with disabilities and to determine disabled athletes’ approach towards sport.[b]Material and methods. [/b]The study was performed on a group of 69 disabled athletes practicing boccia in boccia centers in Zielona Góra and Poznań, by means of a questionnaire survey.[b]Results. [/b]The analysis of results suggested that participation in sports activities positively affected health in 97% of respondents.[b]Conclusions.[/b] It was concluded that boccia as sports discipline reduces social exclusion of disabled athletes through active participation in social life, through attending training, meeting new people, participation in events and tournament trips.
