SUCCESS BORN OF SUFFERING DEPRESSION AS A CATALYST IN THE LIVES OF ENGLISH WRITERS
Journal Title: International scientific journal Science and Innovation - Year 2025, Vol 4, Issue 5
Abstract
This paper explores the paradoxical relationship between depression and success among English writers. While depression is commonly perceived as a debilitating condition, this study argues that it has, in many cases, served as a creative catalyst. By analyzing the lives and works of select English authors who battled depression, the research highlights how inner turmoil not only shaped their literary voice but also contributed significantly to their eventual recognition and success. The paper also investigates the complex relationship between depressive symptoms, creative cognition, and literary productivity in a cohort of prominent English writers. Departing from purely biographical interpretations, this study employs a mixed-methods approach combining psychometric analysis of writers' documented psychological states (where available) with computational text analysis of their literary works. We hypothesize that specific dimensions of mood dysregulation, such as heightened negative affect, rumination, and altered cognitive processing, may correlate with measurable aspects of creative cognition (e.g., originality, fluency, flexibility) and specific stylistic features in their writing (e.g., lexical complexity, emotional valence, narrative structure). By quantitatively assessing the interplay between psychological state and creative output, this research aims to contribute a more nuanced and empirically grounded understanding of the role of depression in the creative process.
