SULFUR COMPOUNDS IN SPORT; BIOTIN, THIAMINE AND TAURINE

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 1

Abstract

There are multiple sulphur organie compounds including vitamins and sulphur amino acid derivatives. Biotin and thiamine belong to B vitamins and, as coenzymes, they play a key role in energetic transformations, neurophysiological processes, immune reactions, etc. Both vita-mins are found both in animal and plant produets. Hypovitaminosis is rarely developed, usual-ly due to malnutrition, prolonged parenteral nutrition and sulfonamide or antibiotic treatment. Humań body demand for biotin and 30 fjg per 24 hours while the demand for thiamine is pro-portional to the amount of consumed energy (0,4-0,6 per 1000 kcal).Taurine is a cysteine derivative and, unlike vitamins, it is produced by our bodies. The hi-ghest concentration of taurine is in the skeletal muscles, kidneys, liver and brain. Taurine regu-lates calcium ion concentration in cells, acts as a neurotransmitter and a neuromodulator, is re-sponsible for osmoregulation, participates in bile acid formation and modulates the course ofin-flammatory responses. The deficiency of biotin, thiamine and taurine in athletes' diet results in pyruvate and lacta-te accumulation in muscles and an inereased sensitivity to oxidative stress. This affects the function of the muscular and nen/ous systems and limits the ability to physical effort performance. Biotin, thiamine and taurine are the components of the so called 'Yitamin drinks or energy drinks. Taurine is now one ofthe most popular adjuyant agents used to mitigate cellular dama-ge, muscle fibrę contractions and concentration improyement during physical exertion. The paperpresents the application of selected sulphur compounds, based on the available literaturę and the authors' own experience.
