Surface water quality assessment in gilan province, Iran
Journal Title: Journal of Biodiversity and Environmental Sciences (JBES) - Year 2015, Vol 6, Issue 5
Abstract
Surface water in Gilan province is assessed in order to determine its hydrogeochemistry and irrigation water quality using 55 water samples. In this regard, concentration of major ions and physicochemical parameters including , , , , , , and pH, EC and TDS were determined. The average content of the major cations and anions follow as: and , respectively. Hydrogeochemical composition of surface water is a mixture of water types including , mixed and . Nonetheless, themajority of the samples has water type. Hence, alkaline earths and strong acid anions exceed alkalis and weak acid anions, respectively. Based on Gibbs diagrams and ionic ratios, weathering of silicate minerals is the main process controlling the surface water chemistry. Saturation indices (SIs) indicate that dissolution of carbonate minerals also plays an important role in regulating the surface water chemistry. Although sodium percentage (Na%), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS) and permeability index (PI) in most of the samples are below the standard, nonetheless, residual sodium carbonate (RSC) and Total hardness (TH) indicate significant irrigation water unsuitability and hence thenecessity for caution and future study.

Modification of chitosan radiation-induced graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile onto chitosan
The monomer, acrylonitrile, was graft copolymerized onto Chitosan using γ-rays as initiator. The reactions were carried out in a homogenous aqueous medium. After removal of the homopolymer, the graft copolymer was char...
The impact of gas flaring and venting in Nigeria and management options: a case study of oil producing areas
This study assesses gas flaring and venting impacts in some oil producing areas in the Niger-Delta of Nigeria. The research instrument adopted for this study was the questionnaire survey and laboratory analysis, both m...
Phytoremediation potential of mangrove species at Pangasihan Mangrove forest reserve in Mindanao, Philippines
Mangrove ecosystems along coastal areas perform a crucial role in filtering sediments and material deposits that could otherwise directly drain into marine ecosystems. Thus, the ability of mangrove species as heavy metal...
Forest degradation: An assessment of Gedo Forest, West Shewa, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia
The level of forest degradation was determined in Gedo Forest, one of the remaining Dry Evergreen Montane Forests in Ethiopia using line transects from East to West surrounding mountain escarpments locating 60 quadrats....
Allelopathic potential of Diospyros kaki L. against Triticum aestivum L., Brassica compestris L. and Trifolium alexandrinum L.
Allelopathic studies of Diospyros kaki L. were conducted by using aqueous extracts from leaves, bark, litter and mulching in various experiments. It was observed that the germination, radical growth, plumule growth, no....
