Survey on agricultural wastewater quality level in Sugarcane agro-industrial units located in west and east of Karoon River by using WQI

Journal Title: Journal of River Engineering - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 5

Abstract

The present research has been conducted to survey on agricultural wastewater quality from Amir Kabir and MirzaKoochak Khan units in the west, and Farabi, DeabelKhazaei and Salman in the east side of Karoon River. Monthly sampling of physicochemical parameters was done during 2008(February-March) and the parameters including pH, DO, BOD5, EC, Turbidity, Salinity, Phosphate, Nitrate, Ammonia and Nitrite were measured. In this study, some parameters such as water temperature, pH and turbidity were measuredin situ by using multi-parameter system (Hach) and the others were measured by using1 existing standard methods. WQI (water quality index) has been used to determine water quality class. In terms of pollution extent and stations, water quality wasevaluated by quality index curves and the water quality of given stations, were determined by using water classification system table. The results from investigations shows that, the maximum value of the amplitude of the annual variation of investigated parameters were obtained: DO (0-13.6 ppm), BOD5 (0-10.79 ppm), Turbidity (2.11-8.4 ppm), EC (6.73-14.58 ms/cm), PO4 (0.07-1.8 ppm), NO3 (3.09-106.96 ppm), NO2 (0.003-7.4 ppm), pH (7.1-7.9) and Turbidity (0-57 ppm). The WQI values in the west and the east of Karoon River indicates that each of 3stations is classified in group 4 of pollution category, according to water quality system.
