SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT: THEORETIC-PRACTICAL ASPECTS

Abstract
The article views some of the theoretic-practical aspects of sustainable urban development. City as a complex economic social-demographic and spatial system demands adequate government. Balance among economic, social and ecological development of urban territory determines the necessity for its sustainable development. The author views the principles of sustainable urban environment management, accepting as a fundament the requirements for sustainability from Gothenburg. Practical sustainable urban environment management is connected to development and realization of respective plans and programs. Plans are compatible with visions and policies for sustainable urban territory development. Programs are reflected as measures, initiatives and projects and are a fundament for a change of urban environment. The last part of the article presents a certain European frame for the creation of a better living environment in cities. The author has stated that EU`sustainable development strategy identifies key property fields of activity, which would lead to a frame for turning cities into a better place to live.
