Abstract
The article deals with the theme of domicile peace in housing estates. The domicile peace designates different descriptions and interpretations of estate soundscape. It differentiates the perception of natural and so called built environment - within private properties. The nature-culture opposition defines relationship between these two types of environments. The conflict between the contradictory attitudes of garden owners has been discussed. It is visualized in landscape and soundscape. It is considered to be a consequence of inconsistent strategies in private gardens management. The key character embodied in the conflict is a mowerman ,and a tool - a mower. The basic notion that differentiates between interpretations of domicile peace and ways of space management is "a weed." The etymology of “a weed” is described in the article. The text refers to the interpretive anthropology, and the method of deep description of Clifford Geertz. The text presents exclusionary attitudes and interpretations generated by various forms of gardening. These activities incidentally compose the urban soundscape.
