THE ASSESSMENT OF SURFACE WEAR OF EPOXY COATINGS AGED WITH A POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE WATER SOLUTION
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 226, Issue 4
Abstract
The paper concerns the assessment of the influence of ageing with a 20% potassium hydroxide water solution on the wear of an epoxycoated surface. FTIR and X-ray examination proved intensive oxidation of the surface layers of aged coatings. Chemical structure destruction of aged coatings caused an increase of glass transition temperature Tg. As the effect of ageing, the hardness decrease of the surface layers of coatings was noticed. Moreover, oxidised surface layers showed a decreased cohesion of coating constituents. As a result of pigments and fillers released from the coating structure, craters developed on the coating surface. This essentially influenced the roughness increase of aged coatings, the more with the longer time of aggressive medium action. For example, roughness parameter Ra for 1080 h ageing increased more than 35 times. Roughness parameter Rz and waviness parameter Wt are subjected to fewer changes in all periods of ageing. Parameter Rz (equal 0.5 μm for unaged coating) increased more than twice for 1080 h ageing. However, coating waviness for the same ageing period increased over five times, i. e. from Wt = 1.15 μm for unaged coating to Wt = = 6.03 μm for the coating aged for 1080 h. Ageing changes of coating structures also contributed to the increase of coating porosity. After 1080 h of ageing, the pore volume increased by 59%. Moreover, cracks development was stated on coating surface as the result of pore consolidation. As a result of ageing, epoxy coating resistance to erosive action of alundum particles decreased, which was proved by more than twice the increase of their erosive wear intensity after ageing for 1080 h.
